How do I adopt a pet?

If you are interested in adopting a dog from the shelter please visit 601 East Grant Street Dexter, MO or contact Officer Grainger by calling the Police Department at 573-624-5512.

What is the adoption fee and what does it cover?

The adoption fee is $150.00 and the fee covers vaccines, microchip, spay/neuter, and heartworm test.

I lost my pet what should do?

Contact the shelter as soon as you know the pet is lost. If the dog is picked up by the shelter there is a seven day stray hold in Dexter. If owners do not come forward the dog will become available for adoption. Check the Dexter Animal Shelter facebook page for updates on lost or found animals. 

Is there a leash law in Dexter?

Yes. Any animal is to be held by a leash when walking or running over any street, alley, public park or grounds within the City limits.

Print out the volunteer form on this page and turn it in at the Police Department, 305 Cooper Street Dexter, MO. 

Does the animal shelter accept donations?

Donations to the shelter are always welcome. Donations are accepted at the shelter and the Police Department. The shelter is always in need of dog food, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, toys, treats, harnesses, leashes, and collars. How long do the pets have to be adopted?

The Dexter Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter and there are no time limits placed on adoption. 

Do you take in any type of animal?

The shelter accepts dogs only at this time.
